Tucson is the home for the first state university in Arizona. The University of Arizona was established here even before the state of Arizona was officially a state.
How Tucson Got It's Name
The word Tucson was originally derived from an Oo'dham word Cuk Son, which mean, "at the base of the hill". This refers to the location of the city in Tucson Basin which is adjacent to volcanic mountains. In ancient time, there was (a) big volcanic eruption(s) which later died. The aftermath was a huge caldera which is the big Tucson basin in modern days.
Geologically speaking, Tucson offers a lot of fascinating geological features to study geology in action. A good example of metamorphic core complex is also found here. However, that is not the main thing that attracted me to study here. The University of Arizona home the top ranked Geosciences department in the nation, #1 tied with University of Michigan Ann Arbor.
